It's almost iPhone time
And no, I'm not waiting with baited breath. I'm not wringing my hands in anticipation of the latest iProduct.
In fact, the only thing I'm waiting for is the chance to see this thing work and decide if I want it.
My friend and I are both in the midst of changing jobs, and still starting up our conference company, so i'm on the market for a device that will keep us both connected when in meetings, or out and about.
Running the company doesn't require us to be chained to our laptops, but it'd be swell if he could answer an email while in a marathon meeting, same goes for me when I'm camping, hiking, or in my own (god I hope not) marathon meeting.
If the iPhone was 3 more months away i'd probably pass completely, and just get a crackberry, or some other smart phone. However (fanboy-ism aside) Apple is the master of the User Experience, haters can deny all they want, and can refuse to acknowledge it, finding faults with silly stuff, but Apple has led the pack in User Experience for a while now. I have high hopes that they can continue the trend, since most phones out right now, have a terrible UE, akin to trying to teach a skunk to sit, and stay.
That said, Apple can (and might) completely fuck the iPhone up. If any more than one of these ends up being a reality, the iPhone won't be for me, and likely, won't be for any serious phone user.
- No third party Apps. I like Apple but Mac OS would flop if it was closed, so will the iPhone. If Steve owned a smart phone (I'm guessing he doesn't, based on his past comments) he'd understand that no device meets all needs.
- No replaceable battery. I tolerate my iPod not having one. Joel is 100% right, having not battery cover made of cheap plastic, makes the iPod look nicer than any of it's competitors. However when my iPod runs out of juice, I put it away and charge. When my phone runs out of juice, if I can't swap the battery, i'm unavailable and that's unacceptable.
- No support for business apps. If the best the iPhone can do is push Y! mail, it's no use to me. i have a Y! mail account, but Gmail is where all the important stuff goes. meaning I need a capable web browser.
There's probably a few more, but those three are the ones that spring to mind whenever I think of the iPhone. June whatever can't come soon enough, I hate having decisions hanging out in limbo, drives me batty.

The iPhone will be pretty cool, but it doesn't appear to be designed with business users in mind.
I'd say your best bet is to get a Treo or Blackberry. I'm quite fond of my Cingular 8125. It's got all the flexibility of Windows Mobile and a nifty keyboard for long emails.
Yeah i suspect you're right, I've been suspecting as much also, and am hopeful that in true Apple style, they do the reveal and it's more than we expected.
But if not, I'll be on the look out trying out the options. I love crackberries, had one a while back for work. Having had the Axim I dunno if i want to go windows Mobile. Thankfully Cingular carries at least one of each so i'll test em all out.
That and you couldn't pay me to be an ATT Wireless customer again. Been there, done that, have the scars left from having to completely look over my bill every month and then spend an hour or more on the phone trying to get them to correct my billing. Ugh.
I know it's the old grand dad of cell phone providers, but I've been happy with Verizon.
