Radiohead doesn't want to sell music

Well they do, just back in the 80's and 90's. They've apparently decided that selling music in 2007 is just not for them. TUAW reports that they won't be selling their music on iTunes, because they don't want the songs sold seperately, only as a complete album...

Great, when you guys invent a time machine to go back to when that model worked, let us all know.

On the one hand, selling the whole album for artistic reasons is one thing, not that I agree, but at least it's a reason.  To me it screams, "We couldn't put together an album of all killer, great songs, so we want to make sure everyone doesn't just buy one song."

Time's have changed Radiohead... time to join us in the present. The Album model is gone. Well strike that, it's not gone, it's still in Wal-Mart and Target and Best Buy, whom I'm sure sell plenty of music, but seeing as how iTunes, has surpassed Best Buy as a music retailer... I'd be having second thoughts on shunning such a large source of customers...

Poor Radiohead, say hello to Right Said Fred, when VH1 casts you in "Where are they now"

demafleez's Gravatar To suggest that a band is outmoded based soley on what bundling format they choose to digitally distribute their songs by is bunk. The album format may be dead for a vast majority of the schlock "artists". But for musicians who actually write good music and have a substantial body of work to release, the album model certainly still works and isn't quite dead.

iTunes has surpassed Best Buy and other brick and mortar shops because they sell digitally. It's the ease of instant gratification. Radiohead aren't trapped in the past. You •CAN• get their stuff digitally AND they're being progressive by selling in unprotected mp3 format. Just not thru iTunes. And what's wrong with that? Careers don't live or die by iTunes' terms...

And to speak of Radiohead and Right Said Fred in the same freaking sentence...blasphemous!

TO my way of thinking, producers of quality goods, don't need to bundle. Bundling is a way to move the lesser quality goods along with those that are actually what attract customers.

This idea is widely supported by the success of the micro payments process. Were it not a good idea, it would not succeed. That's how (in most cases) the market works.

Selling in MP3 is hardly progressive. Plenty of indy groups have been doing it... oh.. FOREVER.

I disagree on your instant gratification premise 100%.

Thanks for your opinion, but I politely disagree, and we'll see how Radiohead's album does compared to music selling on iTunes. You can love or hate iTunes, but it's a force in the market. Shunning it WILL hurt sales.
